What the Ohio flag shows

A swallow-tailed burgee, not a rectangle, with three red and two white horizontal stripes that state law says stand for roads and waterways, and a blue triangle at the staff for hills and valleys. Seventeen white stars surround a red disc on a white 'O': thirteen grouped around it for the original states and four more toward the triangle's peak for Ohio as the seventeenth state. The 'O' stands for Ohio and suggests its nickname, the Buckeye State.

History of the Ohio flag

Architect John Eisenmann drew the design for Ohio's building at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, where it first flew, and the legislature made it official the following year; Ohio had no official state flag for nearly a century before that.
