What the Minnesota flag shows

The side nearest the staff is a dark blue shape, a stylized outline of Minnesota, holding a white eight-pointed star with one point facing north; the rest of the flag is bright blue. The Secretary of State says the star reflects the state motto 'L'Etoile du Nord', the dark shape stands for the land, and the bright blue stands for the state's waters. The commission's report instead describes the dark field as the night sky and the state's shape.

History of the Minnesota flag

Minnesota's first official flag dates from 1893 and was redesigned in 1957 as a blue banner keeping the state seal, with a slightly modified seal after 1983. In 2023 the Legislature created a commission to replace the state's flag and seal, and it altered a concept by Andrew Prekker into the final design.
