We found no official act adopting this design, and a 1978 state study says its precise origin is unknown. The Hawaii Constitution makes it the state flag.

What the Hawaii flag shows

Eight horizontal stripes run white, red and blue in repeating order from the top, with the British Union Jack in the upper corner beside the staff, and the flag is twice as long as it is high. A 1978 state Legislative Reference Bureau study says the stripes stand for the eight major islands; state law itself assigns no meaning, and Britannica says the colors have no official symbolism.

History of the Hawaii flag

The flag served the kingdom, the republic and the territory, and delegates to the 1950 constitutional convention rejected proposals to alter or replace it, so it continued unchanged at statehood.
