What the Arizona flag shows

The lower half is solid blue and the upper half is thirteen rays, seven red and six light yellow, spreading from the center, with a copper-colored five-pointed star at the center. State law says the flag represents Arizona's copper star rising from a blue field in the face of a setting sun. The Arizona State Library adds that the rays stand for the thirteen original colonies, their colors recall Coronado's Spanish flags, and the star marks Arizona as the largest U.S. copper producer.

History of the Arizona flag

Col. Charles W. Harris designed the flag in 1910 for the Arizona National Guard Rifle Team to carry at the National Matches at Camp Perry. The Third Legislature adopted it in 1917, and it became law without the governor's signature.
