What the Georgia flag shows

Three equal horizontal bands of scarlet, white and scarlet, with a square blue canton in the upper corner by the staff covering the top two bands. The canton holds the state coat of arms in gold above the words 'IN GOD WE TRUST', all encircled by 13 white five-pointed stars. State law says the stars represent Georgia and the 12 other original states.

History of the Georgia flag

The 2003 flag replaced one adopted in 2001, which had itself replaced the 1956 flag carrying the Confederate battle emblem; in the March 2, 2004 advisory referendum more than 73 percent of voters chose the 2003 design over the 2001 flag. The New Georgia Encyclopedia describes the layout as derived from the first national flag of the Confederacy, the Stars and Bars.
