What the Mississippi flag shows

Red bars at the staff and fly ends, each edged by a narrower gold bar, flank a blue central panel with a white magnolia blossom and gold stamen inside a circle of 20 white stars, a gold five-point star at the top and 'IN GOD WE TRUST' at the bottom. By statute the magnolia stands for hospitality, hope and rebirth; the 20 stars for Mississippi as the twentieth state; and the gold star for the state's indigenous Native American tribes and the five inhabited regions of the world from which Mississippians originate. The statute also assigns blue to vigilance, justice and perseverance, red to hardiness and valor, and gold to the state's cultural and artistic history.

History of the Mississippi flag

Mississippi's 1894 flag, which included the Confederate battle emblem, was retired under H.B. 1796, signed June 30, 2020, which also created a commission required to include 'In God We Trust' and exclude that emblem. Voters approved the commission's design with about 73 percent of the vote on November 3, 2020.
