What the Florida flag shows

A white field is crossed from corner to corner by two red diagonal bars, each one-fifth of the flag's height wide, with the state seal at the center at half the flag's height. The seal shows a Native American woman scattering flowers, a sabal palmetto palm, a steamboat on the water and the sun's rays over a distant highland, ringed by the words 'Great Seal of the State of Florida: In God We Trust.'

History of the Florida flag

From 1868 until 1900 the state flag was the seal on a plain white field; the red bars were added in 1900 after concern that the banner looked colorless when furled and could read as a flag of truce when hanging still. A corrected version of the seal was presented in 1985, changing details including the palm, the steamboat and the depiction of the woman.
