Latest count: Democrats 251, Republicans 155, with 29 of the 435 seats not yet called, as reported Thursday, November 5. A majority takes 218 seats.
Republicans went into the election with a 219–214 edge, so Democrats needed a net gain of just three seats. Their called wins already put them 37 above where they started.
How large will the majority be?
Estimates differ, and none is final. The party is on track for its largest majority since the 2008 elections. Yahoo News projected about 255 seats and more than 40 flips, although Democrats have now nearly reached that seat count with 29 races left. The New York Times reported that Democrats were on track for a majority of at least 50 seats.

Races still being counted
No single public list we could verify covers all 29. These are examples named in reporting on November 4 and 5, and some may have been called since.
- Colorado’s 4th: Rep. Lauren Boebert (R) against Eileen Laubacher (D) was still tight on Thursday.
- Florida’s 9th: Rep. Darren Soto (D) led by about half a point on Wednesday.
- North Carolina’s 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th and 10th: all within two points and uncalled on Wednesday afternoon.
- Districts in Arizona, California, Colorado, Tennessee and Virginia: the BBC listed outstanding races in these states early on Wednesday.
Louisiana’s 6th will not be settled until a later vote. Democrat Chauna Banks and Republican Blake Miguez advance to a December 12 election, so this seat cannot be final before then.
Leadership changes
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has announced a bid for Speaker. Current Speaker Mike Johnson told aides he will not seek to lead the Republican conference, and Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan are both running for minority leader. Read what happens next.
