Current count: Democrats 28, Republicans 20, with two uncalled, according to NCSL. Republicans held a 26–24 lead before the election, and Democrats will now hold more governorships than Republicans for the first time since before 2010. If Democrats win both uncalled races, the final split would be 30 to 20.
The five offices that flipped
All five moved from Republican to Democratic control.
| State | Winner | Defeated | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia | Keisha Lance Bottoms | Rick Jackson | Democrats’ first win here since 1998 |
| Iowa | Rob Sand | Zach Lahn | Open seat |
| Nevada | Aaron Ford | Gov. Joe Lombardo | Incumbent defeated; gives Democrats a state trifecta |
| Ohio | Amy Acton | Vivek Ramaswamy | Open seat |
| Texas | Gina Hinojosa | Gov. Greg Abbott | Incumbent defeated; first Democrat since the 1990s |
The two uncalled races
Kansas (Democratic-held). Democrat Cindy Holscher led Republican Ty Masterson 549,974 to 542,929 on Wednesday night, a 7,045-vote margin. Because the race is within one point, state law triggers a close-race audit of 10% of precincts in each county. Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day count if they arrive by Friday. Holscher has declared victory. A source close to Masterson told The Kansas City Star he does not plan to seek a further recount if her win is confirmed.
Alaska (Republican-held). Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins had 49% of first-choice votes, ahead of Republican Bernadette Wilson at about 29%. If no candidate tops 50%, ranked-choice tabulation decides the race on November 18. MultiState’s table lists this race as a Democratic flip, but AP had not called it as of Alaska Public Media’s report, and The Kansas City Star listed it as uncalled on Thursday. We treat it as uncalled.

Fourteen states did not elect a governor this year. Several of these winners also set historic firsts, and NBC reported a record number of women elected as governors.
Sitting senators and representatives who won
Sens. Tommy Tuberville, Amy Klobuchar and Marsha Blackburn, along with Rep. Byron Donalds, were elected governor. Tuberville gave up his Senate seat to run. Klobuchar’s and Blackburn’s Senate seats were not on this year’s ballot, so their departures would create vacancies that are filled under state rules. We will note those changes in the directory when they happen.
Statehouse power
The shift also reached state legislatures. NCSL counts new Democratic trifectas in Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and the end of Republican trifectas in Georgia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas. Results remain unofficial. Governors’ influence over future congressional maps is one reason this matters for redistricting.
