What the published research tells us
Pew Research Center’s analysis of the 119th Congress identifies 139 of the 533 voting members seated on January 3, 2025 as Black, Hispanic, Asian American or Native American. That leaves 394 members in its non-Hispanic White category across both chambers. These are historical, Congress-wide totals, not a current Senate-only count.
Race and ethnicity are not interchangeable
The source uses “non-Hispanic White” as a defined analytical category. Hispanic identity can overlap with racial identities, and a person can belong to more than one heritage group. Lists using different definitions cannot safely be subtracted from each other to identify individual members.
Why this page does not assign identities to members
The aggregate research does not provide a named White-member roster that we can cite for each individual. We therefore do not infer a senator’s identity from a name, appearance, ancestry or absence from another list. A named roster will be added only when person-level sources are available.
