McAdams graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in political science in 2000 and obtained his law degree from Columbia Law School in 2003. He joined the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell in 2003 and was hired by Dorsey & Whitney LLP in 2006. In addition to practicing law, McAdams served as an adjunct professor at the University of Utah School of Law and as senior advisor to the mayor of Salt Lake City. He stepped down from both roles upon taking office as Salt Lake County Mayor in 2013.
